Quilt Studio Workshop: Storage

It’s a new month already and time for a new topic for Quilt Studio Workshop. This month let’s talk about storage and organization. How do you store your fabric, threads, batting, books, tools, papers (freezer paper, Golden Threads paper) fusible webs, interfacings, CDs and DVDs? Oh! And all of those quilts that you have finished. How do you store them?

We’d be especially interested in any “green” ideas you have used. How have you recycled, reused or adapted furniture to use in your studio? What innovations have you come up with to make your space work better in limited space and on a shoestring budget? And, as you know, we all love to see pictures! Include a few pictures of your studio to show how the storage pieces work.

Thank you so much for taking a few minutes to share with us all. To participate all you need to do is write a post about your storage ideas and post it on your own blog. Add your name and the link to your post to the list below or simply leave a comment if you'd prefer. If you've written posts about this topic before those links are also welcome. Then check back throughout the month as more links are added to learn what thoughts others have contributed here at Quilt Studio.

Quilt Studio Workshop: Fusible Web

In the long history of quilting the process of fusing is a recent occurrence. For many, fusing has been a freeing experience opening up possibilities and making the whole design process faster and more intuitive. For others it is used sparingly in isolated areas. There are as many different approaches to fusing as there are quilters.

Here at Quilt Studio we'd like to explore the process of using fusible web in quilting this month and we'd like your input. Please share with us your experiences, good or bad, with fusible web and share your photos of quilts on which you have used fusible web. Share with us your process of fusing:

  • Do you fuse all of your fabric before you start cutting or do you fuse only what you need?
  • Do you have a favorite brand of fusible web?
  • Do you have a sketch, or road map, when you start out, or do you design totally in fabric?
  • Do you treat the raw edges of the fabric or leave them exposed?
  • How do you quilt the final piece?
  • Do you have trouble keeping your iron clean? How do you clean your iron?

Write a post about your experiences with fusible web and post it on your own blog and give us a link below or simply leave a comment if you'd prefer. If you've written posts about this process before those links are also welcome. Then check back throughout the month as more links are added to learn what thoughts others have contributed here at Quilt Studio.

The more tricks we have in our quilting bag the better quilters we will be. So let’s start sharing those tricks on fusing. And if you have a topic you’d like to see covered in July, leave a comment and let us know!

Match Game

Hi everyone! I've got a pile of these 8.5" blocks that will go perfectly with Debra's navy floral backing/border fabric (posted below). Does someone have or want to make alternate blocks that we can combine into a quilt for the women's shelter clients? We could also construct the quilt in rows: I'll do rows of my blocks and you can do rows of yours, and one of us can assemble the whole thing. Drop me an email if you're game.

10 Quilts for Women Challenge

During 2007 generous members of the Quilt Studio webring answered the call to help complete 40 Quilts for the webring's service project. Due to the diligent work of those involved, all 40 quilts were completed & sent to either hospitals for kids, a VA hospital for female soldiers or the various hospitals for male soldiers sponsored by the Quilts of Valor. It was a wonderful project that worked well with the various talents our webring quilters offered. You can read about the project and view quilts made by using the label: 40 Quilt Service Project.

It's now time for the quilters of Quilt Studio to come together for another worthwhile project. This year it is my hope that we can make 10 quilts for the Montgomery County Women's Shelter in The Woodlands, TX. Here's a little bit of history and the reason for my Call to Quilt:

Recently I had the opportunity to visit with the counselor of one of the local high schools. She runs a teen pregnancy program and I volunteered to make a baby quilt for each girl in the program. I had also thought about making each mother a quilt but the counselor was not interested in that idea. I had friends who had already sent quilt tops in various stages of completion and I wanted to finish them and distribute them to those women who needed them. I discovered that my community has an"undisclosed location" shelter for women fleeing from abusive relationships. While in the shelter they take classes to improve their situations and to prepare themselves for an independent life from their abusers.

When I talked to the United Way counselor who heads the program about offering the quilts to these ladies when they leave the shelter and she was very excited about the idea. Since talking with her, I bought a 15-18 yard bundle of finely woven and finished decorator fabric for $5! My first thought was to offer it as the basis for this Quilts for Women Challenge. I envision it being used as backing, borders and in some portions of the interior of the quilt (hence the 10 quilt idea).
Generally, I expect we could work as thus:

  • Quilters could team up to make quilt tops
  • I and some of the other machine quilters in the webring could machine quilt the tops
  • I could bind them and deliver them to the shelter

My expectation is that some members will want to

  • donate fabrics for the patchwork blocks
  • sew patchwork blocks
  • assemble the tops
  • do all of the above

When we worked on the 40 Quilt Service project, I was able to coordinate everyone's interest so no one had an overabundance of work on any one quilt. I would do the same here. Because these women are moving out of the shelter into small apartments or rental houses, they need bedding. I would propose that the quilts be at least a twin size (which we can handle with borders).

For a timeframe, I am suggesting:

  • we get partners during the last few weeks of Feb
  • make blocks & assemble tops during March and April
  • get the tops to me by the first of June
  • machine quilt during June and July
  • deliver quilts in August

I currently have about 6 quilt tops I will be adding to these quilts and will begin quilting the ones I have in March. I can add any quilts done through this challenge at any time. So, if someone(s) can get tops made sooner than the timeframe, that's great! The shelter houses 60 women daily so there is always a need.

Here are pictures of the fabric we will be working with (for the first 10 quilts):

The background is a rich navy blue, the poppies are more of a greyed turquiose than the slate blue they show here, the hydrangeas are rust and the other flowers are all a yellowy beige, the leaves are both olive and blue green. The copyright on the selvedge is 1979 so think those colorways when trying to interpret the colors. It's really a lovely fabric (as vintage fabric goes) and I think it would interpret well in many quilting genres from oriental to civil war. I can also send a swatch to anyone interested but I would hope you could "jump off" with enough freedom that you wouldn't need to be matchy-matchy. Please keep the designs simple too!

If you would like to participate in the 10 Quilts for Women Challenge, send me an email with what you think you can do towards making a quilt and I'll do the rest! Thank you! thank you!

Wednesday Quilters

Deb has given me a great idea.

"Wednesday Quilter, my blog, was inspired by my mother and her sisters who met each Wednesday for years to quilt, sew, and work on their current needlework project. After a few years, a couple of cousins started showing up. I became a regular member of the group when I left my job during my first pregnancy. I guess you could say my oldest daughter was an honorary member from the age of .... 2 weeks!

Deb suggested I host a group on my blog on Wednesdays - an informal group, where you can show off your latest quilt, needlework, sewing project - whatever.

I invite you all over to the Wednesday Quilter each week to share, leave comments, and show off your work.

We always had coffee and muffins or biscuits so put on the pot and warm up the oven, and join the fun!

Let's start this Wednesday, January 7th, shall we? I hope to see you then!

(Thanks, Deb, for the inspiration. p.S. That woman's got more ideas that Carter's had pills! :-) )

Love,
Deborah

New 10 minutes per day

My name is Jeanne O- from Pleasant Valley NY - My own blog is attached to this blog - www.oberrieth.blogspot.com. I want to join but I have some questions-
1. Will you be moderating this once a month on the Quilt Studio?- The Diva""
2. is there a certain size you are interested in? On your first notice it sounds like you
only want any project that needs to be finished.
3. My recent work has been wall hangings or journal quilts- more textile art than traditional.
Is that OK?

I am looking forward- for 4-5-2008

one more QOV

Here's the second of the two QOV's that I promised to quilt recently. The binding and label are on, so the two quilts will get packaged up and mailed to New Mexico at the end of this week. This is another one that Debra assembled from some donated blocks.
